Optical simulation of laser welding of plastic components.

Speaker:

Pierre Jousset

Discover optical simulation as a key player in the fast and accurate design of laser-welded plastic components, accelerating and optimizing the development of complex parts.

Laser welding by transmission of plastics is a fast joining process, resulting in clean welds with high mechanical strength – a process that is particularly popular in industry.

However, designing complex 3D welds can be challenging: many time-consuming test runs are often required to ensure a homogeneous energy density and consistent mechanical properties along the entire length of the welded joint.

In order to reduce this effort, a macro was developed and validated within the Zemax OpticStudio optical simulation software to simulate the laser welding process.
This tool makes it possible to optimize, in a very short time, the energy density and mechanical properties along the welded joint.

The parameters from the simulation can be directly applied to the actual welding process, ensuring an optimized, faster and less expensive design of laser-welded plastic products.

These developments took place as part of an Innosuisse project in collaboration with the company Leister.
